While alcohol can compete with ethylene glycol for the same enzymes in the liver, the amount of alcohol needed to effectively counteract antifreeze poisoning is dangerously high and not recommended. Consult a nephrologist for any known or suspected cases of methanol or ethylene glycol intoxication to assist in the decision making for hemodialysis. As with all emergency patients, initial treatment should focus on the airway, breathing, and circulation. An exception to this may be a patient who presents immediately after ingestion of a toxic alcohol in whom one might reasonably expect to be able to recover a significant amount of the toxin via aspiration through a nasogastric tube. Antidotes for toxic alcohol poisoning are not required for isopropyl alcohol poisoning. Furthermore, the quality of data available in these published studies is generally poor, as important data points were lacking in many of the studies.

Mortality in patients treated with ethanol was 21.8% for Me and 18.1% for EG. In those administered fomepizole, mortality was 17.1% for Me and 4.1% for EG. Toxic alcohol poisonings with methanol or ethylene glycol have the potential to cause significant morbidity and mortality.

Mechanism of toxicity of toxic alcohols

To quickly neutralize the effects of alcohol toxins, it is recommended to peel one large fruit and eat it one slice at a time (like an orange), slowly and chewing each one well. Many people like to snack on lemon with strong alcoholic drinks, and they also claim that it prevents strong intoxication. Enterosgel, the main active ingredient of which is methylsilicic acid, absorbs toxic components from the stomach cavity without affecting the beneficial components of the gastric flora (digestive enzymes).

In these studies, fomepizole reversed an already‐developed metabolite accumulation and severe metabolic acidosis without dialysis. The minimum plasma concentration of fomepizole to prevent accumulation of formate was 10 μmol l−168. In ethylene glycol‐poisoned dogs, fomepizole and ethanol decreased the metabolism of ethylene glycol, but ethanol produced a much greater degree of central nervous system (CNS) depression 69. Outcomes after toxic alcohol poisoning: a systematic review protocol

Antidotes mediate its effect either by preventing the absorption of the toxin, by binding and neutralizing the poison, antagonizing its end-organ effect, or by inhibition of conversion of the toxin to more toxic metabolites. Binge drinking and alcohol poisoning can cause long-term complications like brain damage, liver failure, or even death if not treated promptly. Due to significant heterogeneity in study designs and populations, a meta-analysis of the data was not possible. Individuals should be mindful of their alcohol intake and set personal limits to avoid overconsumption. Understanding one’s tolerance and pacing alcohol consumption can reduce the risk of alcohol poisoning. Teenagers are particularly vulnerable to alcohol poisoning due to several factors, including peer pressure, lack of experience with alcohol, and a tendency to engage in risky behaviors.

Warfarin Toxicity

If untreated, alcohol poisoning may lead to choking, seizures, respiratory depression, coma or death. Because of these risks, immediate medical help is critical when alcohol poisoning is suspected. To remove alcohol intoxication, you can brew a mixture of marsh rhubarb, string and meadow geranium. The herbs are mixed in equal proportions, then a tablespoon is brewed with 500 ml of boiling water. In the hospital, the necessary diagnostics will be carried out, measures will be taken to restore respiratory function (intubation, artificial ventilation of the lungs, oxygenation), only after this the stomach is cleansed of the remaining alcohol.

Vital Signs: Blood Pressure

Two large studies have tried to compare the effects of ethanol and fomepizole 94, 95. Although Paasma and coworkers did not find a significantly better overall outcome with fomepizole, methanol‐poisoned patients that could hyperventilate had a significantly better survival with fomepizole compared to ethanol 95. No difference in outcome between ethanol and fomepizole was found in the study by Zakharov et al. 84, who did a pairwise comparison to evaluate outcome parameters. These patients had similar treatments except for the antidote, supporting ethanol as an equitable antidote given ideal alcohol overdose circumstances.

These epidemics occur world‐wide, often with high mortality rates 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20. People who accidentally consume methanol or isopropyl alcohol may need hemodialysis. The duration of alcohol poisoning largely depends on how much alcohol was consumed and how quickly the body can eliminate it. Typically, the liver can metabolize about one standard drink (roughly 14 grams of pure alcohol) per hour. If someone has drunk a large quantity, it can take six hours or more to fully clear the bloodstream of the excess alcohol.

3. Data Extraction

The liver is the primary organ responsible for breaking down alcohol, but it can only metabolize a limited amount each hour—generally about one standard drink per hour. When a person consumes more alcohol than their liver can handle, toxic levels can build up in the bloodstream, leading to severe impairment of the brain and other organ systems.
